On the art front

Thomas Allen: Remedy C-print, 2008

Just to step away from farming for a minute, I thought I would update you on the art happenings here and around the country-slash-world.

As some of you know, my husband is an artist. Between his artmaking and my architecture, we’re very fortunate to be able to work from home and have this hobby farm. Tom’s book came out last fall. He will be on the cover of Harper’s Magazine in September, and has six commissioned works in August’s O Magazine (O is for Oprah). He illustrated a feature on memoirs, and had a lot of fun with it; it’s on newsstands now.

On Saturday, August 2nd, he will be in Jackson WY for his show at Oswald Gallery. I love Wyoming, but I love canning season more, so the kid and I will be home-bound.

On September 3rd he persuaded me to go to his show in Boston at Bernard Toale gallery. Bernie is handing the reins over to Joseph Carroll, and Joseph is reopening the gallery that week as Carroll and Sons; it should be a hoot. I could be persuaded to go to this because 1. Boston is a great city and 2. Boston has seafood!!

Other recent publications in which Tom’s work has been shown: New York Magazine did a spread on the precipitous fall of Governor Spitzer. Tom’s take is here. The Irish literary publication Field Day Review did a huge feature of his work in April, with a nice write-up by the novelist Seamus Deane. In Singapore, Designer magazine did a spread in Issue 16.

So. Just thought I would share. There’s been a lot of artmaking going on around here recently!

  1. What lovely and unique work.

  2. Wow – I didn’t know your hubby was so talented! I’ve definitely got my eye out for his stuff.

  3. This stuff is fantastic. I bet the pieces used in the works are a hoot to hunt for too.

  4. Your husband’s work is very provocative and sophisticated. I bet a lot of people are suprised to hear how he lives his life. You don’t think “down on the farm” when you see his stuff!! 🙂 Congrats to him on his recognition and success!

  5. Oh, no with two artists for parents your child is going to grow up to be a tax attorney.
    Just kidding.

  6. Thanks Lewru. It’s fun stuff, and it makes me laugh!

Thanks Mrs GH! He is getting around a lot lately. That’s a good thing of course 😉

Jason, you can only imagine what it’s like to hunt with him. Now, though, he tends to have a real system going. But yes whenever we go anywhere we usually hit a used bookstore, and have library sales pegged for a 3 county area…

Angie, the funny thing is Tom can do his work anywhere, and if given a choice he’d probably do it in some garret in NYC. Not that he doesn’t love the farm, he does, he’s just not as crazy about it (and the lifestyle) as I am. Ah well. It is fun to talk to his gallery guy in the city, though. I tell him tall farm tales he tells me crazy city tales.

Pamela, I do not kid when I tell you I tell my CPA uncle that he better get our kid in to work for him over her summers. Really. You are quite right. I would support whatever she wanted to do though of course except marry a republican.

  7. El, One of my kids grew up to be a republican. I don’t know how that happened! We play the switched at birth game every time we’re together. I love him anyway.

  8. The art compliments the garden very nicely I think.

  9. I have been lurking on your blog for a while. I love seeing what you’re up to.

Weird offer, but if you need any advice on eats while you’re in Boston, feel free to email me for tips!

    Have a great trip!

  10. Mary! How cool. No, that is certainly not a weird offer, as I will be looking for some great places to chow down! I know we’re going to be staying near the gallery, and I also know the gallery guys have lots in store for us but that certainly doesn’t mean we’re fully booked. I will email you for suggestions. I need to find out where we’re staying first, though, to help you narrow the nibbling field, as it were… Thanks!

  11. You bet – I am happy to help. (Directing people to good food is sort of a hobby of mine!)
